Step by Step

How to become an RBT

The Registered Behavior Technician credential is issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Here is the path from day one to your first ABA job.

  1. Meet the eligibility requirements

Be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and pass a background check.

  2. Complete 40 hours of RBT training

Finish a 40-hour course based on the BACB's current RBT Test Content Outline, like our BCBA-led online program.

  3. Pass the initial competency assessment

Demonstrate RBT skills with clients or in role-play for a qualified assessor. Our BCBAs conduct this for Fully Certified RBT students.

  4. Apply to the BACB

Create a BACB account, submit your training and assessment documentation, and pay the application fee.

  5. Pass the RBT exam

Schedule and pass the RBT certification exam. Our mock exams and prep classes are built to help you pass on the first attempt.

  6. Start working as an RBT

Practice under ongoing BCBA or BCaBA supervision. We help you get matched with ABA clinics hiring RBTs.

Requirements are set by the BACB and can change. Confirm the current rules in the official BACB RBT resources.

FAQs

RBT training FAQ

A Registered Behavior Technician is a paraprofessional certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) who delivers Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy under the close, ongoing supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. RBTs work directly with clients, most often children with autism, in clinics, schools, and homes.

To earn the RBT credential you must be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, pass a background check, complete 40 hours of RBT training, pass an initial competency assessment conducted by a qualified assessor, and pass the BACB's RBT certification exam. Always confirm the current rules in the BACB's RBT Handbook.

For training started on or after January 1, 2026, the 40-hour course must be based on the BACB's RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), and the RBT exam is built on that same outline. The initial competency assessment was also updated. Our curriculum is aligned to the current BACB outline.

The 40-hour RBT training covers the content areas in the BACB's RBT Test Content Outline: data collection and graphing, behavior assessment, behavior acquisition (skill building), behavior reduction, documentation and reporting, and ethics and professional conduct.

Yes. Our 40-hour RBT course can be completed online, with self-paced modules plus live, instructor-led classes taught by experienced BCBAs. The competency assessment portion requires demonstrating skills to a qualified assessor.

Many candidates finish the 40-hour course in one to four weeks depending on their schedule. After that you complete the competency assessment, submit your application to the BACB, and schedule the RBT exam. With focused study, most people can be certified within one to two months.

Our RBT training course has been offered for $399, and our Fully Certified RBT package, which adds the competency assessment and exam scheduling help, for $1,199. BACB application and exam fees are paid separately to the BACB. Enrollment is currently paused, so join the waitlist to hear when new cohorts open.
